On this project, flooding of the Schuylkill River caused large scour holes to develop at the nose of the three river piers of Bridge #200. NuPump was contracted by Montgomery County, PA to install almost 100 grout bags as a scour countermeasure. Divers were used to place the bags around the nose of each pier in an overlapping manner, then fill the bags with grout. Due to very limited access to the river, approximately 100 cubic yards of grout had to be pumped from the roadway down to the work area, almost 50 feet below, to fill the bags. Through the use of information gathered by river gauge stations, work was able to be scheduled during periods of lower flows. A single lane of traffic was closed daily for our operations, but only for six hours due to the high volume of rush hour traffic.
