For this project NuPump was called upon by PennDOT Engineering District 4 to perform an emergency bridge underpinning. PennDOT officials were forced to close the structure after a routine inspection found that the structure was badly storm damaged. NuPump’s portion of the work consisted of underwater placement of grout bags beneath the south abutment and the center pier to resupport the bridge’s foundation. First, containment barriers were placed in the stream to isolate the work area. Then, all ice, debris, and loose gravel were removed from beneath the pier and abutment. Finally, the grout bags were installed in multiple layers providing positive bearing on the foundation and filling all void areas. Independent water quality testing and monitoring was done throughout the daily operations to ensure that the work did not interfere with the stream quality. This project had a very short timescale due to the closure’s impact on local school bus routes. NuPump was able to complete the project in seven days and the bridge was opened to traffic just a few days later.
